History

The Saint-Laurent Chapel in Essay was probably built at the same time as the castle. Part of its walls appears to date from the Romanesque period.

Despite later alterations, the present appearance of the Saint-Laurent Chapel reflects the layout from the early years of the 15th century. The Saint-Laurent palace chapel in Essay had two levels: one for the prince and his retinue, and a ground-level one for the household staff and guards.
