Culture and History

Since the beginning of the occupation, the Damigny internment camp successively served five purposes: bringing together French prisoners of war, serving as a veterinary hospital for horses, becoming a material depot from August 1941, bringing together people required to perform the STO before their departure, and, during the battles of the Liberation, bringing together English and American prisoners. Due to the length of time it was in use, the Damigny internment camp was one of the most significant internment camps in Normandy.

North of Damigny is the Chapel of the Infant Jesus of Prague. The local history also includes a permanent open-air exhibition arranged on nine arched panels. Damigny's historical exhibition is intended for hikers, cycling tourists, and visitors passing through.

In the area around Damigny, there were one- or two-story weavers' houses with one or two looms for producing hemp and linen fabric.

Getting Around and Events

The Véloscénie route starting from Damigny follows a former railway line that was converted into a greenway. The 29-kilometre Véloscénie route from Alençon to Pré-en-Pail-Saint-Samson is suitable for family outings. A section of the Véloscénie accessible from Damigny runs alongside the stadium.

Les Elles de l’Orne is a recurring solidarity walk and run with walking and running courses. The 12th edition starts at the Pôle universitaire d’Alençon–Campus de Damigny; in this edition, a 5-kilometre course runs through the streets and paths of Damigny and along the greenway.

ACOR is based at 25 Rue des Iris in Damigny and offers trail rides, endurance rides, and equestrian gatherings as part of equestrian tourism.
