Nature

The Haute Vallée de la Sarthe Natura 2000 site covers 3,503 hectares; 80 % of it lies in the Orne département and 20 % in the Sarthe département. Apart from the source areas, it is a broad alluvial valley with extensive natural nutrient-poor meadows, a highly branched network of waterways and marshy areas in places. The soils favour remarkable plant communities.

The site overlaps the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park across 42 % of its area.

Culture

The Church of Saint-Gilles was built in the 12th century according to a Romanesque layout, with a single-nave body, flat buttresses and an apsidal choir. Its west gable has a portal with a semicircular archivolt arch supported by columns with carved capitals.

Above the panelling are rectangular interior panels featuring angels carrying scrolls. The friezes on the choir walls depict kneeling angels facing the altar. The heavily damaged monumental paintings were recently reattached; missing areas were retouched and completed. The Maillard family, owners of the Château de la Jarrière, donated the stained-glass windows and bells of the Church of Saint-Gilles.

History

The cylindrical baptismal font is decorated with arcades in low relief and is located northwest of the nave of the Church of Saint-Gilles. It is owned by the municipality and was listed as a protected object on 24 July 2000. A free visit to the Church of Saint-Gilles was offered as part of the European Heritage Days.
