Nature

Cahan is one of the municipalities in the “Coteaux siliceux des vallées de l’Orne et du Noireau” area. This area consists of steep slopes on Armorican bedrock, situated above the meanders of the Orne and the Noireau. It includes rare habitats such as siliceous dry grasslands on shallow soils, rock slabs, thermophilous meadows, ravine forests, heathlands and inland cliffs.

Culture

The Chapelle Saint-Roch on the Plateau des Hogues dates from the mid-16th century and overlooks the valleys of the Orne and the Noireau. The chapel features 70 m² of frescoes painted by Maurice Le Scouëzec in 1932.

Pierre Tranquille Husnot was born in Cahan and was a renowned botanist. Circular route no. 9, “Avec Pierre Tranquille Husnot”, starts in Les Planches in Cahan and is 14.8 km long; a variant covers 11.1 km. Near his birthplace, the hamlet of La Bijude, there is a small Protestant cemetery where Pierre Tranquille Husnot is buried. The “Avec Pierre Tranquille Husnot” circular route offers wide panoramic views over the Noireau Valley.
