Varouville: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Culture
The Saint-Martin church in Varouville features a gable-roofed tower. It was completed in 1710 and has a gable roof typical of the region. The church stands on a slight rise. Its Gothic portal has a sculpted depiction of Saint Martin’s charity as its tympanum; this sculptural group was classified as a historic monument in 1975.
The fountains and washhouses that have survived to this day are also part of the traditional village landscape. The Fontaine Saint-Clair is associated with the treatment of throat ailments.
Landscape
The north-western quarter of Varouville consists of a fully preserved bocage landscape whose appearance has remained unchanged since the 19th century. Beyond this area, the village is also characterised by a rural landscape with numerous plots enclosed by dry-stone walls. This form of land division is characteristic of the Cotentin coast.
The narrow valleys feature wetland vegetation; most houses are located near watercourses. Thus, in Varouville, bocage features, dry-stone walls and valleys close to water come together within a clearly rural village landscape.
Historical traces
Varouville’s former railway station is easy to recognise. Another historical trace can be found at the Moulin de Varouville: along the side of the house, the wall of the former millrace and the openings for the now-missing water wheel are visible.
Cycle route and mill complex
The 96.9 km gravel route “A la conquête de l’est” lists the Moulin de Varouville as a route point. Along the road, the former inlet channel with its small wall made of granite rubble and the above-ground stone watercourse can also be seen there. The outlet channel is visible from the bridge.
