Culture and history

The Château des Matignon in Torigni-sur-Vire dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. It belonged to the Matignon family for more than three centuries.

The impressive Mur Grimaldi is a 300-metre-long and 12-metre-high enclosing wall dating from the 18th century. Jacques IV de Matignon had it built in 1715 to protect his wife from the northern winds during her walks. The wall overlooks the Étang de Torigni.

The Musée Arthur Le Duc displays works by the renowned animal sculptor Arthur Le Duc (1848–1918), who was born in Torigni, in the castle’s former private chapel. Since 17 September 2003, the Musée du château has held the designation “Musée de France” within the meaning of the French Heritage Code.

A niche containing the bas-relief “Vierge à l'Enfant” can be found in the church’s exterior wall. It has been registered as a movable cultural object since 21 January 1977. The Musée Arthur Le Duc is free of charge and opens during the Journées du patrimoine.

Water and paths

There are landscaped walking paths around the Étang de Torigni-sur-Vire. Regional and national fishing competitions are regularly held at the Etangs de Torigni. Rainbow trout are regularly stocked in the Etangs de Torigni.

The large pond of Torigni-sur-Vire is located in the immediate vicinity of the town centre, the campsite and the shops.
