History and Culture

The Musée du Débarquement Utah Beach stands at the site where American troops landed on 6 June 1944 and presents the events of D-Day in ten consecutive sections. The museum is located on the Vélomaritime cycle route; a route from Carentan to Utah Beach is also available.

At Utah Beach, in the hamlet of La Madeleine in the municipality of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, stands the Monument Borne 00 of the Voie de la Liberté. It marks the symbolic starting point of the Voie de la Liberté commemorative route, which traces the advance of General Patton’s 3rd US Army from the landing beaches to Bastogne in Belgium over more than 1,145 kilometres.

The Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in the third quarter of the 20th century using remains of the previous building. The church tower of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont has a square, originally Gothic lower section and two upper, octagonal levels in the Renaissance style.

Nature

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Domaine de Beauguillot nature reserve is located in the municipality of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, in the heart of the Baie des Veys, and comprises mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, ponds and wet meadows. It has observation points that are freely accessible all year round and offers guided tours.

Activities

Swimming is permitted along the coastal section of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, but it is not supervised; part of the beach is reserved for birds. Utah Beach is used by numerous trainers from the municipality before or after competitions to relax and help their horses recover.

The Communauté de pleine nature d’Utah Beach offers sand yachting and longe-côte at Utah Beach. Cycling with various types of bicycles is also available, along with walks on the beach and on the surrounding paths.
