Culture

The angel relief with the funerary inscription has been listed as a cultural object worthy of protection since 11 December 1980. The façade of Saint-Georges Church contains a reused Gothic stone relief from the 15th century depicting an angel with an inscription panel. L’Émonderie is considered notable architectural heritage from the 16th century.

History

The priory was transferred to Marmoutier Abbey near Tours around 1060. The former priory church was built around the 13th century on the foundations of an older building and served as a parish church until its destruction in 1944. The bases of the nave pillars, several layers of the portal, the plain Neo-Romanesque altar mensa and the chancel floor laid with Caen tiles have been preserved.

In 1962, it was decided to rebuild Saint-Georges Church according to plans by the architect Clermont. Near the portal of the rebuilt Saint-Georges Church, remains of the former church, built in the 18th century and destroyed in 1944, have been incorporated. Inside are a polychrome wooden crucifix from the 16th century and two keystones from the former church. A collegiate church with four regular Benedictine canons is said to have been founded by Onfroy de Bohon in the 11th century.

Paths and Architectural Styles

The official hiking route “The Bohons” offers 10 km and 8 km variants, lasting approximately three and two hours respectively. It passes through hamlets with traditional earthen houses.

The Manoir de Bohon is a 16th-century manor house built in the traditional “masse” earthen construction style. La Grairie is a traditional earthen farm built in the style typical of the marshland landscape. La Meslerie is a heavily wooded hamlet with two 19th-century manor houses.
