Roncey showcases its history through distinctive buildings and paths. The Letenneur Mausoleum combines the features of a castle with those of an ancient tomb. The approximately 30-metre-high monument consists of a crypt and a terraced tower above it; it was intended to house the graves of Letenneur, his wife and their two children.

Culture

The ensemble next to the mausoleum also includes the concrete Fontaine du Pucelage on an adjacent meadow, which Letenneur built with his own hands. The grounds of the Letenneur Mausoleum are accessible all year round. The vault is open on Sundays from 15 May to 15 September, from 3 to 6 pm.

The Church of Saint-Côme and Saint-Damien is also part of Roncey’s architectural history. It was rebuilt from 1957 to 1960 using stones from Roncey; stone from quarries in Saint-Denis-le-Vêtu was also used for this reconstruction.

History

“Opération Cobra – la poche de Roncey” is the name of the tour covering regional history, which uses photographs and explanations to convey the liberation of the commune on 29 July 1944.

Nature

The 11-kilometre “Circuit de la chapelle des Costils” hiking trail starts in Roncey. It passes along wooded bocage paths and by the Chapelle des Costils and the Letenneur Mausoleum.

The Chapelle des Costils stands on the site of a former quarry above the Vanne River. It is dedicated to Notre-Dame de Lourdes; its construction began in March 1873, and it was blessed on 21 October 1875. The chapel was restored in 2013, and a service is held there every year.
