The Church of Orval, dedicated to Saint Helena, is a building dating from the 11th century and classified as a historic monument. It has a square Romanesque crypt. Since 1878, Romanesque medieval baptismal fonts and a 13th-century capital have been displayed in part of this crypt.
Those planning a stay in Orval may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Trails and Water
The Circuit des Moulins et Écluses circular hiking trail runs for 13 kilometres through Orval. The church square in Orval is recommended as the starting point; the circular route is marked in yellow.
The 5,462-metre-long Soulles Canal was built by Alfred Mosselman between 1834 and 1840. A greenway runs along the canal on the former towpath and is open to walkers, sports enthusiasts and day-trippers. Several information panels along the greenway explain the history of the canal and the natural features of this site. By bicycle, the greenway connects Coutances, Regnéville-sur-Mer and Orval; several footbridges allow the river to be crossed.
The Pont des Delles is an example of late-19th-century railway architecture. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of Coutances and its cathedral.
