Martinvast: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Martinvast combines a Romanesque-influenced church with a landscape shaped by valleys and paths. Martinvast Church dates from the 12th century and was listed as a historic monument on 4 April 1906.

Culture

Martinvast Church is Romanesque in design, except for the bell tower built at the beginning of the 18th century and a Gothic chapel dating from 1650. Most of the grotesque figures on the corbels refer to the ancient Celtic and Gallic, and therefore pagan, religions. Also noteworthy is the seated statue of the Virgin Mary in Martinvast, dating from the 14th century: it is the oldest of four such representations in Basse-Normandie.

Landscape

To the north, the Divette valley borders the municipality of Martinvast. Because it is prone to flooding, it features a landscape naturally kept free of development. The valley of the Le Bisard stream crosses the centre of Martinvast from east to west and preserves an interesting landscape.

Paths and Gardens

The Les Trois Déesses network comprises twelve municipalities, including Martinvast, and maintains a network of hiking trails. The associated topoguide contains colour maps for several hiking trails in each municipality, as well as mountain-bike routes. The L'Oraille walking trail begins at Place de Pourtalés and leads along small roads and paths through the bocage landscape between hills and forests.

Other places also combine nature with landscaped grounds: at Château de Martinvast – L'Épopée des Sens, visitors can explore the Jardin Réservé. The garden at La Ferme des Roches covers around one hectare and features mixed borders as well as carefully selected collections of shrubs and trees. Ecuries Le Goupil has an indoor riding arena, two outdoor riding arenas and a 22-hectare pasture for horses and ponies.

Transport Links

The Cherbourg–Paris railway line crosses Martinvast from north to south. The RD 650 also passes through Martinvast and connects Cherbourg with the west coast of the Cotentin.
