The abbey was adapted to a challenging natural setting between the 11th and 16th centuries as a technical and artistic achievement. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 966 on a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael since 708. The Gothic convent complex La Merveille comprises the Hôtes and Chevaliers rooms, a refectory and a cloister open towards the sea.

Mont-Saint-Michel was a place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages and an important centre of medieval Christian civilisation. The abbey also offers three augmented-reality routes that explore its medieval history and its 19th-century history.

The former access causeway has been replaced by a bridge-passerelle; shuttle buses take visitors from La Caserne to the foot of Mont-Saint-Michel. Access to Mont-Saint-Michel is free all year round, with the Le Passeur shuttle helping visitors reach the Mont.

The village of Mont-Saint-Michel is freely accessible, while admission to the abbey requires a ticket and booking in advance is recommended. The rock of Mont-Saint-Michel is accessible day and night; operating hours apply to the shuttle and the abbey.

The visitor shuttle departs from the quay in front of the CIT and runs every 5 to 12 minutes depending on visitor numbers. It has access ramps and on-board audio assistance. The walk from the car parks to the abbey entrance takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

There are many stairs on the abbey grounds. Visitors are advised to wear good footwear and have an appropriate level of physical fitness.

The culinary traditions of Mont-Saint-Michel include salt-meadow lamb, which grazes for 70 days in meadowland regularly covered by the sea, and Mère Poulard's soufflé omelette, served on the Mont all year round.
