During the 1944 landings, the inhabitants of Le Mesnilbus stored their belongings in the church crypt before fleeing south for several weeks.
The monument to 2nd Lt Robert L. Duffy stands on the eastern side of the D57. Known as the Robert Lee Duffy Monument, it commemorates Robert Lee Duffy, a fighter pilot with the 404th Fighter Group whose P-47 Thunderbolt crashed near Le Mesnilbus on 27 July 1944. The aircraft associated with the Robert Lee Duffy Monument was excavated in 1992. Robert Lee Duffy survived after parachuting from the aircraft and later lived in Colorado.
