Culture and history

At Cap Lévi, the history of the present-day Phare du Cap Lévi encompasses several periods: the lighthouse was built in 1858, destroyed during the 1944 landings and rebuilt after the war. The present-day Phare du Cap Lévi was commissioned in 1948 and classified as a historic monument in 2009. At 28 metres high and with 113 steps, it also has a square rather than a cylindrical shape.

At the entrance to the Vallée des Moulins stands the Marie-Ravenel stele, which was inaugurated in 1905 and has been classified as a historic monument since 2006. Port Lévi was originally built for quarry workers who transported granite for the construction of the Cherbourg roadstead. In the landscape of Fermanville, shaped by the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Rond des Sorcières has been preserved as megalithic evidence.

The Batterie du Brulay, also known as the Sea Eagle, was incorporated into the Atlantic Wall during the German occupation. The Fort Napoléonien du cap Lévi is now an interpretation and leisure centre; the outdoor areas can be visited free of charge.

Nature and trails

A large part of the municipality of Fermanville lies within the Natura 2000 zone Récifs et marais arrière-littoraux du Cap Lévi à la pointe de Saire. Numerous paths cross the Vallée des Moulins and are suitable for walking. Mills made from the region’s pink granite can still be seen there.

The 14.1-kilometre La lande et les bois de Fermanville route combines wooded landscapes with open heathland. It crosses the Vallée des Moulins in the upper section of the Viaduc de Fermanville. The 7-kilometre Les Landes hike leads to the heights of Fermanville and the Batterie du Brulay. The Les Landes circular trail also leads into the protected coastal areas of the Conservatoire du littoral in Fermanville.

Coast and active routes

Anse du Brick has a fine sandy beach at the foot of the cliffs, which is used for surfing and other water sports. The GR®223 stage between Cap Lévi and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is 19 kilometres long and leads towards Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. The Le Cap Lévi circular trail starts at the Port Lévi car park.

Les Chevaux du Cap Lévi offers horse rides lasting from one hour to a full day.
