Carquebut: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Carquebut reveals traces of history in its buildings, memorial sites and landscapes. Between the village ensemble, château grounds and wetlands, a multifaceted picture of the village emerges.
History
The former temporary cemetery of Blosville was located in the municipality of Carquebut. Between 7 June 1944 and 23 November 1947, a total of 5,804 American soldiers were buried there. The former site at Blosville was the largest temporary Allied military cemetery in Normandy.
Buildings and museum
The Église Saint-Ouen preserves several medieval structural elements: the nave and choir date from the late 13th or 14th century, while the side chapels and bell tower date from the 15th century. The bell tower is square and ends in an octagonal spire.
The Château de Franquetot is also part of the architectural heritage. It features painted interior decoration from the early 17th century; its park was created in the second half of the 19th century by the botanist Pierre-Etienne-Joseph Lafosse. The Château de Franquetot is partially protected as a historic monument. The château also houses the D-Day Collins Museum, at 38 rue Eturville in Carquebut, which displays life-size dioramas.
Village and landscape
The village of Carquebut forms a particularly cohesive ensemble of old stone houses and old stone farmsteads. At the same time, Carquebut consists of picturesque hamlets and buildings. The name Le Port de Carquebut bears witness to former activities such as fishing, the use of reeds and basket-making.
At Le Port de Carquebut, a viewpoint offers a view over the marshland. The Les Fonds du Cotentin circular route follows small roads to the marshes or past the farms and manor houses of the Plain. The flooded area of Carquebut / Beuzeville-la-Bastille is listed as a wetland.
