Buais has a long history: the first known mention appears in the founding charter of the collegiate church of Mortain from 1082. The former church in the centre of Buais is also said to date back to the 11th century.

History of the Village Centre
After the centre of the municipality was relocated to Sainte-Anne, the original village centre became known as Vieux-Bourg. A building was later constructed on the former site of the Sainte-Anne chapel; its ground floor housed the boys' school.
Churches and Architectural History
Plans for a new church took shape after renovation work on the church and presbytery in the old village centre in 1839; construction began in 1862. The new church in Sainte-Anne was built in 1868. The Église Saint-Paterne is a 19th-century building. It contains a Renaissance statue of Saint Paternus.
