The Monument des Fusillés was inaugurated in June 1947. It stands in a landscaped park at the site where eleven members of the Manche P.-T.-T. resistance network were shot on 15 June 1944. The monument can be visited at any time without fixed visiting hours; the average visit lasts 20 minutes. Information panels are available on site.
History
Between the end of April and the beginning of June 1944, the Maquis de Beaucoudray comprised around 30 resistance fighters. On the night of 5–6 June 1944, it carried out several acts of sabotage targeting telephone cables, thereby completely isolating Saint-Lô. The Maquis de Beaucoudray also had two rented houses on the edge of the Bois de Moyon.
Those choosing Beaucoudray as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Nature
Beaucoudray is part of the continental ZNIEFF Type II “Moyenne vallée de la Vire et bassin de la Souleuvre”. Beaucoudray offers a very beautiful view of the Bois de Moyon.
Culture
The Église Saint-Laurent in Beaucoudray is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Based on the window lintels in the chancel, it is dated to the 18th century, specifically 1767.
The church houses a 16th-century Vierge douloureuse made of raw clay, which is listed as a Monument historique. Also listed as a Monument historique is a 16th-century Vierge à l’Enfant made of polychromed and gilded limestone. The collection also includes a painted wooden ensemble consisting of a Crucifixion and poutre de gloire, dating from the 16th to the 17th century and listed as a Monument historique.
The statues made of raw clay consist of rammed earth bound with straw and were polished and shaped with quicklime. They are considered very rare in the Manche département. The ensemble of painted and gilded wood comprising the high altar, tabernacle and altarpiece is also listed as a Monument historique. At the Église Saint-Laurent, Saint Lawrence is invoked for the healing of burns and shingles.
