In Barfleur, maritime traces range from the active fishing port to the history of the town. The Musée Atelier de Barfleur offers exhibitions on Barfleur’s maritime history and development across 200 m².
When planning a trip, the wish to rent a holiday apartment in Barfleur may be the main focus.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Nicholas stands on a rocky promontory surrounded by a maritime cemetery. Its construction phases date from the first half of the 17th century and the 19th century. The church has been protected as a Monument historique since its listing by decree of 21 October 1988.
Port and Coast
Barfleur’s fishing port is an active tidal harbour where small and large fishing vessels mix with pleasure boats. The port has 125 mooring buoys secured to ground weights and a main chain; there is no berth for visitors.
Walking Routes
The GR®223 runs around Barfleur harbour and offers a 3.5 km coastal walk to the Gatteville lighthouse at Pointe de Barfleur, or in the other direction to Pointe de Saire.
The 3.1 km Sentier de découverte runs through Barfleur and past typical fishermen’s houses made of grey granite with intricately decorated slate roofs. The “L'histoire d'un port” route is a very easy 3.3 km walk lasting around 1 hour and 40 minutes, part of which follows the GR®223.
To this day, Barfleur remains the starting point for the route to the “Mont” and for the “Chemin aux Anglais”, also known as the “Chemin de Paradis”.
Cycling
The Boucle cyclotouristique de Barfleur starts at the tourist office and links coastal sections with bocage countryside. It is a 21 km cycling loop around the small port of Barfleur.
Local Life
Fresh fish and seafood are available in Barfleur during “La Débarque”, when the trawlers return, as well as at the Saturday morning market; during the season, the market is also held on Tuesdays.
Barfleur’s tourist information office offers ticket services for boat trips, guided tours and admission to historic sites.
