History
The Church of Saint Jean was consecrated in 1512. The Church of Saint Jean Baptiste, with its cemetery, lies on the banks of the river some distance from Verdalle. Verdalle’s church dates from the 14th century and has an octagonal bell tower.
At the upper end of the Castrum de Contrast stands a castle tower. In the Castrum de Contrast, traces of an old road can be followed for around 50 metres.
Landscape and Nature
Verdalle is part of the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc. The village lies at the northern foot of the Montagne Noire in the south of the Tarn département, between the plain and the uplands. The southern edge of Verdalle is covered by the Forêt d'Hautaniboul, a former royal forest; its highest point is at an altitude of 812 metres.
There are ponds and a small marsh at the Château de Verdalle, attracting frogs, dragonflies, water snakes, lizards and salamanders.
