Lacabarède: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
In Lacabarède stand two twin menhirs dating from 1385, known as “les deux sœurs” (“the two sisters”). According to local legend, they originally touched each other, are slowly moving apart, and the end of the world will come as soon as one of them reaches the summit of the mountain.
Those who choose Lacabarède as a destination because of its trails and menhirs may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture
The church of Lacabarède is decorated with frescoes by Nicolaï Greschny. The village also has traces of local history connected with glassmakers.
Orientation
The Thoré Montagne Noire intercommunal tourist office provides reception, visitor information, tourism development and tourism promotion throughout the Communauté de Communes Thoré Montagne Noire area; since summer 2019, it has also been operating with a mobile information stand.
The “Sentier des Hautes Futaies” is open every day all year round and is free to access; it can be reached via the car park at the former railway station on the D612 in Lacabarède.
Trails
The “Les Clairières de Sales” trail begins in Sales, a hamlet in the municipality of Lacabarède. It passes through deciduous woodland interspersed with small meadow areas. There are beautiful views at the hamlet of Farail; after the hamlet of Baylé and halfway between Lebrat and Farail, the route offers a panoramic view on the Aude side.
The hiking trails around Lacabarède run above the valley and pass through the departments of Aude, Hérault and Tarn. The “La fontaine des Trois évêques” hiking route leads to the spring of the same name and to small stone villages.
Landscape
The Plateau du Poumairol offers the opportunity to gain altitude in Lacabarède. The “Fontaine des Trois Evêques” mountain-biking route circles the Plateau de Sales and leads to the neighbouring uplands of Hérault and then Aude. It passes through high-altitude granite landscapes with moors, beech forests and upland meadows.
Nature
During forest excursions in Lacabarède, visitors can observe great spotted woodpeckers and marsh tits.
