Culture and History

Frausseilles was one of the villages of Cordes designated as “guet et de garde” and was taken by Protestant troops in 1658. The tower of the Église Saint-Pierre is fortified at its base, has a ribbed vault and transitions into an octagonal floor plan; it is accessible via a spiral staircase.

The fort of Frausseilles comprised a tower, moats and a gatehouse. The fortifications were expanded for defence in the second half of the 14th century in the context of the Hundred Years’ War. The fort occupied an approximately rectangular area measuring about 43 metres in length and just under 30 metres in width. The Église Saint-Pierre was incorporated into the defensive system of the fort of Frausseilles. As a communal place of refuge, the fort served the residents of the settlement centre and the great majority of the inhabitants of the surrounding rural area.

The Église Saint-Pierre also contains a tabernacle dating from the time of Louis XIV. It was listed as a protected object on 21 May 1991.
