Nature
The ZNIEFF Forêts d'Hautaniboul, de Cayroulet et du Pas du Sant is located in the municipality of Escoussens and extends south of the village across wooded valleys on the northern slope of the Montagne Noire. It includes beech, oak, chestnut and coniferous forests as well as dry heathland, rocky areas, wetlands along streams, meadows and peat bogs.
Culture
The parish of Saint-Sernin in Escoussens is first mentioned in written sources in 1150. The church of Saint-Sernin was rebuilt at the end of the Middle Ages on a rocky outcrop in Escoussens.
The Château d'Escoussens is a fortress located in Escoussens in the Tarn department, built by the de Dourgne family from the 12th century onwards. From the 15th century until the French Revolution, the Château d'Escoussens was owned by the Carthusian monastery of Saïx.
Fontbruno was an agricultural estate that became part of the obedience of the Carthusian monastery of Saïx at the end of the 15th century; its resources were based on livestock farming, timber, ironworking and glassmaking.
The Atelier de teinture bleu Pastel – La ferme au village in Escoussens offers tours and participatory workshops on natural dyeing with woad and indigo.
