Hiking

Several signposted trails combine physical activity with the landscapes around Dourgne. The “Des trois ruisseaux” hike in Dourgne is a moderately difficult 12-kilometre circular trail with an average duration of around four hours. The “Des Quatre Saints” hike is also a moderately difficult circular trail, covering 15 kilometres and taking an average of around six hours; along the way, it passes four sites dedicated to the saints of Dourgne.

The municipal “De la Capelette” hike begins at Les Piscines and is designated as a moderately difficult 7-kilometre circular trail with an average duration of around three hours. Les Piscines are historic basins and diversion weirs that once supplied water to the canals of Dourgne. La Capelette can be reached by car; it is a five-minute walk from the Capelette car park.

Culture and History

The village of Dourgne has arcades dating from the 18th century. The Chapelle de Fatima was built in the early 1950s to commemorate the return of the village’s sons from the war. The Chapelle de Mouniès, also known as the Chapelle du Baylou, dates from the 1950s and is located in a cool, wooded valley at the foot of the Montagne Noire.

The Cascade du Baylou was historically associated with hopes of healing; the affected part of the body was washed with a cloth that was then left at the site. A huge statue of Saint Stapin stands on the Roc de l’Abbade; the site is considered a landmark of Dourgne.

The Abbaye Saint-Benoît d’En Calcat was founded in 1890 in the municipality of Dourgne by Dom Romain Banquet. It cannot be visited generally, but anyone interested can take part in the monks’ prayers.

The present-day La Capelette de Saint-Ferréol chapel was built in 1947 by monks from the Abbaye Saint-Benoît d’En Calcat. La Capelette chapel is closed to the public and can be visited in July and August as part of guided tours organised by the tourist office. The monastery shop of the Abbaye Sainte-Scholastique offers, among other things, liturgical clothing, ceramics and stationery.

Nature

A hiking area of the Montagne Noire near Dourgne is classified as a Natura 2000 site. The Espace du Baylou picnic area is located near a chapel built in the 1950s, within the municipality of Dourgne, in a cool, wooded valley at the foot of the Montagne Noire through which the Baylou stream flows.

La Capelette de Saint-Ferréol is situated at an altitude of 534 metres and offers views over the Lauragais plain, the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire.
