Varen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A distinctive testament to Varen's history is the building of the Ancien prieuré bénédictin, dating from the 14th century and connecting the church and château. It is the only surviving above-ground remnant of the former monastery.

Culture

Varen developed in the 10th century around a Benedictine monastery founded by the Abbey of Aurillac. In the past, Varen was a medieval village surrounded by walls. The Église Saint-Pierre was built as early as the 11th century and preserves exceptional carved capitals. The Porte du Four is the last significant surviving remnant of Varen's fortifications.

Water

The 3-kilometre-long body of water on the Aveyron near Varen is used for canoeing, fishing and walking.

Trails

The PR2 Varen: Chemin de Cadiès starts at 66 Route de Cadiez in Varen. It is an easy 6.6-kilometre hiking trail with a walking time of around two hours. The PR1 Varen: De Sol Viel à Succaillac is a 13.9-kilometre moderately difficult hiking trail with a walking time of around four hours. This trail also offers two viewpoints overlooking Arnac and Varen.

Surroundings

The surroundings of Varen include the Abbaye de Beaulieu-en-Rouergue monastery, the historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Costejean, and the peaks of Al Pech and Roc d'Anglars. In the wider region around Varen are the historic site of Abbaye de Loc-Dieu and the Église Saint-Eugène de Vieux church.
