The medieval old village of Milhars is laid out in a spiral on the slope of a rocky promontory below the feudal castle and is known as the “Village des Murs”. The historic centre features horseshoe-shaped fortification walls, arcades, terraces, squares and former fortified gates, including the Porte du Ravelin and the Porte Haute.
Culture
The Château de Milhars was rebuilt in 1630, probably on the foundations of a 13th-century castrum. It is privately owned and closed to visitors. At the entrance to Milhars stands the Saint Pierre aux Liens church, a flamboyant Gothic building dating from the 12th or 13th century.
Milhars lies on the Route des Pigeonniers. The dovecotes there are considered an important part of the cultural heritage due to their architecture and history and can be viewed from the public road. Guided tours of the old village are offered for groups of 20 or more by reservation.
Every year in mid-February, the Fête de l’osier takes place at Saulaie Jean-Pierre Barrau.
