Culture and History
Escazeaux is a former walled village located along the Route des Crêtes. Old residential buildings have been preserved in the village centre; Escazeaux’s sights also include farmhouses dating from the 19th century.
The former fortifications of Escazeaux had four gates with drawbridges leading to the moats. The walls, which were equipped with machicolations, were partly reinforced with watchtowers connected by a defensive walkway. In 1403, Escazeaux is referred to as a fortress.

The Church of Saint-Séverin was built from 1887 to 1889 on the site of the demolished previous church. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it also has a square bell tower. The church’s six stained-glass windows were created in 1903 by the Bordeaux glass painter Dagrant. Saint-Séverin also has a Neo-Byzantine altar ensemble with an altar cross and six candlesticks. A bell dating from 1594 bears the Latin inscription „Post tenebras spero lucem“.
The history of the seigneury is also well documented: the Seigneury of Escazeaux belonged to the Viscounts of Terride from the 13th century until the French Revolution. The customary rights of Escazeaux were granted in 1271 by Bernard d'Astaffort and his son. Escazeaux has also preserved extensive municipal archives dating back to the 14th century.
Landscape and Nature
The Route des Crêtes near Escazeaux offers views of agriculturally shaped hills, green valleys and forests. The Bois de la Crambe is located within the municipality and is designated as a wooded biodiversity corridor, or a reservoir of biological diversity.
