Montbrun is situated on a rocky spur above the Lot and is predominantly characterised by the landscape of the Causse. The village faces the cliffs of Saut de la Mounine. At the same time, Montbrun lies on the right bank of the Lot and is crossed by the D662 departmental road.

Nature

The village of Montbrun and its surroundings are designated as a protected site. A viewpoint on the cliffs is the Rocher de Bédal, from where there are views over the meanders of the Lot. Among the species living on the cliffs of Montbrun are the subalpine warbler, short-toed snake eagle, crag martin, wallcreeper, common raven and Eurasian eagle-owl.

Culture and History

The Dolmen des Aguals, also known as the Combe de l'Ours, is characteristic of the megalithic architecture of the Causses du Quercy. The protected site of the Dolmen des Aguals, also known as the Combe de l'Ours, is likewise located within the municipality of Montbrun. The village's attractions also include gariottes, stone shepherds' huts made from flat-laid stones; some of them are still very well preserved. The Church of Saint-Blaise is part of Montbrun's cultural heritage.

The former railway line from Cahors to Capdenac ran as far as the Montbrun halt at the entrance to the village. The ruins of Montbrun Castle include the remains of a keep that may date from the 13th century, as well as a tower from a construction phase after the Hundred Years' War, attributed to the late 15th or early 16th century. The fortress of Montbrun is documented in a charter dating from 1223.

Hiking and Cycling

The hike offered as part of the Trail des 3 Combes passes through the centre of Montbrun and leads to Mas de Doucet. On the return route via Combe-Noire, it offers views over the Lot Valley; participants can choose between a 9 km and a 14 km route. The 9th edition of the Trail des 3 Combes took place on 22 March 2026 in the Causse of Montbrun.

The Voie verte en liberté route begins in Montbrun and follows the former railway line. It is accessible to people using manual or electric wheelchairs, as well as to pushchairs. The Circuit de Gréalou offers views of the Lot Valley between Montbrun and Cadrieu. At the same time, it is a challenging mountain-bike route that alternates between the Lot Valley and the Causse.

Local Information

At Montbrun's 2024 Fête votive, a truffade meal prepared once again by members of the festival committee was offered. The Church of Saint-Blaise in Montbrun was scheduled to open during the summer months of 2024. A campsite on the banks of the Lot is also listed in Montbrun.
