Culture and History

The north chapel of Notre Dame de l’Assomption was added in the early 16th century; the wall bell tower was built in the 19th century. In the hamlet of Brouelles, which belongs to Maxou, there is also a recently restored washhouse to see.

The Church of Saint-Pierre in Brouelles is a small Romanesque building with a short nave, a section with a bell tower, and a semicircular apse closed by a calotte vault. Based on the form of the portal and its archaic decoration, its oldest parts are likely to date from the early 12th century. A two-bay south chapel was added in the late 15th or very early 16th century. The choir paintings can be dated to the late 18th or very early 19th century.

Paths through the Countryside

A hiking route to Maxou follows the Ruisseau de Maxou valley to the village. Another hiking route from Saint-Pierre-Lafeuille to Maxou leads to Notre Dame de l’Assomption, which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. The hiking trail also leads to the ruins of Revel, which may have been the Revel family’s seigneurial residence dating from the 13th century. The ruins of Revel should be avoided because of the risk of falling rocks.

The Route De Maxou à Brouelles passes through two shady little valleys and over limestone slopes. The Circuit de Maxou is an easy circular route covering 7.5 km, with 182 metres of elevation gain and a duration of approximately two hours.
