Gagnac-sur-Cère: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gagnac-sur-Cère was one of the three fortified towns of the Viscounty of Turenne in Quercy. In the town centre, the round shape of an old fort belonging to this viscounty and a medieval gate have been preserved.

Culture

The historic town centre is characterised by narrow lanes known as “couretzou”; typical houses are grouped around the church. The year 1661 is inscribed on the western façade of Saint-Martin Church. The present church was probably almost entirely rebuilt in the mid-17th century. Its architecture includes a square apse with a bell tower above it, as well as two side chapels, each with two bays featuring quadripartite vaults. Gagnac-sur-Cère is also home to a wooden Pietà from the town centre, characteristic of the late 17th or early 18th century and preserving its original gilding.

Nature and Trails

Several signposted routes pass through the municipal area. The long-distance hiking trail GR 480 crosses the eastern part of Gagnac-sur-Cère between Laval-de-Cère and Estal. The Le CEP association has defined and marked six walks of varying lengths, which are maintained annually; they are called the “Boucles du CEP”. An intermunicipal hiking trail crosses Gagnac-sur-Cère in the west near Biars bourg and Fontmerle, as well as in the southeast between Estal and Glanes. There is also an alternative route to Santiago de Compostela created by Chamina, which passes through Gagnac-sur-Cère and is marked with blue squares featuring yellow rays as stylised scallop shells.

Landscape

Pech de Salgues reaches almost 300 metres and towers over the town centre of Gagnac-sur-Cère. From the road from La Poujade to Fontmerle, there is a view of the town centre and the Chapelle de la Bessonie cemetery chapel on the left bank of the Cère.

The Chapelle de la Bessonie was scheduled to offer free, self-guided visits on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the European Heritage Days. At the cemetery chapel, an enlarged oculus allows visitors to look into the interior without having to go to the mairie to have the door opened.

Local Life

Ferme du Marais de Gagnac offers visitors a guided tour of the farm and provides seasonal organic vegetables throughout the year. L’Embellie is a country café in Gagnac-sur-Cère serving homemade seasonal cuisine made with local produce, available to eat on site or take away.

liO bus route 887 serves Gagnac-sur-Cère on the Saint-Céré–Biars-sur-Cère route and operates from Monday to Friday.
