The GR 65 to Santiago de Compostela runs along the southern and western sides of the municipality of Escamps. The section of the GR 65 near Escamps is regularly maintained; in places, its walls are decorated with land art frescoes. Escamps surrounds a vast sinkhole, below which lies a small lake.

Culture

The small lake at Escamps is accompanied by old butterfly washhouses. The original wall paintings have been preserved inside the Église Saint-Léonard. The Grande Sompe of Escamps combines a pond, a washhouse, a fountain and a livestock watering trough, and features an internal staircase.

History and Surroundings

The Manoir des Rozières has stood in Escamps for more than five centuries. Numerous stones and dry-stone walls can be found along roads, paths and around the fields; here and there, a gariotte bears witness to the work of the people and the passage of time.

Nature and the Past

The Tempories are a palaeontological site dated to an age of 34.44 million years. The Phosphatières des Tempories preserve visible mining remains from phosphate extraction in Quercy at the end of the 19th century. At the phosphatières, viewing platforms offer views over the site; information panels in the renovated former workers’ hut explain the formation of the Causses du Quercy and the phosphatières. The Phosphatières des Tempories have been renovated and secured to allow visitors free access. As part of the “My Village, My Fossil” project, Palaeotodus escampiensis was selected as the fossil emblem of Escamps.
