The Grotte de Pech-Merle in Cabrerets is a protected historic monument; its floors and galleries decorated with prehistoric drawings were placed under protection by decree of 17 February 1951.

The Grotte du Pech Merle comprises 1 km of galleries and 7 chambers with mineral formations, prehistoric paintings and engravings. The Musée de Préhistoire du Quercy complements the cave visit with information about the works at Pech Merle and the most important representations in other decorated caves of the Quercy that are closed to the public.

The Château de Cabrerets was built in the 15th century by the Gontaud family, the lords of the village. It has two towers and a residential building crowned with machicolations. The interior of the Château de Cabrerets could be visited on Sundays in July and during the Journées du Patrimoine in September.

Hiking and trails

The Chemin du Temps near Pech Merle is a 3.5 km-long hiking trail that tells the story of the universe from the Big Bang to the present day. It offers views of the Quercy and the valleys of the Lot and the Célé.

The Boucle de Monclar is a short hike through the Monclar forest with a Cuzoul and a dolmen. The Boucle du Carol is a short hike across the limestone plateau, passing meadows, Caussenarde sheep and other small heritage sites.

The Circuit du Pech Merle is a circular hike from the village of Cabrerets to the Grotte du Pech Merle. The route follows paths with impressive views over the valley and then continues along wider trails up to the plateau.

The GR651 stage from Cabrerets to Bouziès takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Grotte du Pech Merle is located a few minutes from the start of the GR651 stage from Cabrerets.

The Entre Lot et Célé route passes through the Monclar state forest and leaves it via a technically challenging descent towards Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.

Nature

The Sagne Valley is classified as a Natura 2000 site recognised by the European Union because of its remarkable biodiversity.

Water

Swimming is possible in the Célé; weather conditions, bathing water quality and bathing advisories are displayed every morning.

In Cabrerets, there is a pebble beach downstream from the mill at the foot of the cliffs. The bathing area is unsupervised; canoeists and swimmers share the site.

From the water in the Célé Valley, you can observe kingfishers, birds of prey on the cliffs overlooking the river, and the architecture of the mills.
