Aujols is home to the “Papillon” lavoir, a distinctive feature of the Causse de Limogne. Its name derives from the V-shape of the limestone slabs against which the washerwomen beat their laundry. The former washhouse has lost its original function and today serves as a place for relaxation and remembrance. There, 20 adjoining washhouses form a site of exceptional dimensions.

The Château des Cardaillac-Bioule occupied the upper part of Aujols’ village centre and was built in the second half of the 13th century. The Château d’Aujols, now known as “Les Créneaux”, was probably gradually abandoned from the beginning of the 16th century and had become a ruin by the 18th century.

Nature

A secured viewpoint offers a view of the Igue de la Ramade, the largest of the three Igues d’Aujols. The Igues d’Aujols are protected and enhanced as part of the Lot département’s “Espaces naturels sensibles” policy. The steep walls of the Igues d’Aujols provide a natural habitat for numerous remarkable and protected bird species.

The Grotte des Conquettes lies below rocky escarpments in the narrow, shaded Conquettes valley. The hills in the Conquettes valley are covered with wooded heathland and stony dry grasslands and today form a remarkable biodiversity reserve that should be protected.

Hiking

A 12-kilometre hike leads from the village on a circular route to the Igues d’Aujols. The “Balade de Puits en Lavoirs” is a moderately difficult walking trail that begins at Aujols town hall, is 10.5 kilometres long and takes around three hours.
