Culture

The Saint-Laurent Church in Sailhan was built in the Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. Wooden statues of Saint Lawrence and Saint Andrew stand on either side of the choir. The neo-Gothic church also houses a permanent exhibition of old photographs.

The historic village landscape also includes the wash house and the métier à ferrer. The wash house in Sailhan was built as an extension of the fountain-and-livestock-trough complex, with raised basins. A fresco by Marie Troussicot on the wash house depicts three historical figures from the village: Marguerite Maria, Jeanne-Marie Menvielle and Marie Griet-Ferras. The métier à ferrer in Sailhan is located on a small hill at the end of the chemin du Pi, next to a calvaire.

Sailhan is also home to a Chrisme described as a Romanesque Chrisme from Comminges, which is thought to date from the 11th or 12th century. The Es de Sailho festival committee organises the festival of Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of the village of Sailhan.

Nature

The Moulin de la Mousquère stands on the banks of the Mousquère mountain stream, halfway between Sailhan and Estensan. There is an educational trail at this site covering topics such as birdsong, characteristic Pyrenean animals and bees.

Sailhan offers the TIR A L’ARC NATURE activity, which combines hiking and archery. It includes a woodland route where visitors can discover the fauna and flora of the Pyrenees. At the métier à ferrer on the chemin du Pi, there is a viewpoint for observing birds of prey.

Things to Do

The Pays d’Art et d’Histoire circular trail is an easy 1.5-kilometre hike starting in Sailhan. Four information boards provide an insight into the history and heritage of Sailhan. GPX and KML files are available for the Sailhan circular trail and can be exported to a GPS device or another navigation device.
