Ilheu: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Ilheu is a small, very pleasant village in the heart of the Barousse Valley. The village lies at an altitude of 700 m and enjoys plenty of sunshine. Anyone planning a stay in Ilheu may wish to rent a holiday apartment for this purpose.
Nature
Ilheu is one of the 25 municipalities of Barousse that are integrated into the Comminges Barousse Pyrénées Regional Nature Park. A hiking trail leads to the upper part of the village of Ilheu.
Culture and History
Ilheu is home to a Baroque church dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It has a gilded wooden altarpiece; its façade also features a votive altar with a swastika. Ilheu is also home to a Gallo-Roman cremation basin.
Ilheu survived the plague, moved to the other side of the hillside and settled on the sunny side. This local history stands alongside the visible traces in and around the church.
Events
Ilheu is one of the villages where the annual Brandons festivals are celebrated in Neste Barousse. For Ilheu, 4 July is specified as the date.
The Baréjadis programme planned in Ilheu for 5 July 2025 included a public demonstration of hand-shearing sheep, as well as activities involving wool spinning and carding. A major Baréjadis event on haymaking was also planned in Ilheu for that day. It is regarded as an annual Barousse event at which traditional techniques are revived.
