Culture and history
The Tour-Porte Sud is the last monumental remnant of Galan’s former town walls. The fortified stone tower has a footprint of 6.20 × 5.50 metres; the vaulted gateway is 2.40 metres wide and more than 3 metres high. By decree of 13 March 1946, the Tour-Porte Sud was added to the supplementary list of historic monuments.
The Halle-Mairie is also connected with the history of the town: from 1821 to 1958, a market was held there under the market hall on Thursdays. By decree of 11 October 1984, the Halle-Mairie was added to the list of historic monuments. The Église Saint-Julien in Galan was built from 1540 to 1549 on the site of an older building.
Hiking and cycling
The La Serre hiking trail is 14 kilometres long and has an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Galan, passes through woodland, follows a ridge path and crosses the Baïsole via a footbridge.
The Les Côteaux hiking trail starts at Galan’s medieval bastide and offers views of the Pyrenean mountain range. On Les Côteaux, there is the option of hiking two loops, each lasting 2.5 hours, along the D23 between Sabarros and Recurt. The Vélosud / V81 cycle route passes through Galan, continues to Lannemezan and then heads towards Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.
Culinary delights
Galan hosts the Fête de la Tourte Pyrénéenne, a recurring summer culinary festival centred around a speciality typical of Bigorre.
