At Lac d’Estaing, a 2.5-hour hike leads to waterfalls and Lac de Plaa de Prat. Lac d’Estaing itself is a glacial lake at an altitude of 1,161 metres in the Estaing Valley.
Nature
At Lac d’Estaing, visitors may be lucky enough to spot waterfowl, griffon vultures, small mammals, marmots, as well as local plants and flowers. The circular path around Lac d’Estaing features information panels covering various aspects of the area, including pastoral farming and wildlife.
Culture
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Estaing was built between 1796 and 1822 and combines imitations of Romanesque and Gothic forms. Inside, there is a high altar made of painted wood beneath a canopy supported by four wooden columns with Doric capitals, a statue of John the Baptist standing on a dome, and a gilded wooden tabernacle. There is no altarpiece.

The GR10, the long-distance trail across the Pyrenees, is included in the municipal list of hiking trails in Estaing. The Tour du lac d’Estaing is a very easy circular route covering 2.4 kilometres and taking one hour. The section of the Tour du lac d’Estaing along the left bank, opposite the road, is accessible by wheelchair with human assistance and bears the “Promenades pour tous” label.
Fishing is possible at Lac d’Estaing; a fishing permit is required. Outdoor activities listed in Estaing include walks, mountain hiking, fishing and mountain biking.
Lac d’Estaing is accessible by car. During the peak season, the starting point for the hike to Lac d’Estaing can be reached from Argelès-Gazost, Arras-en-Lavedan, Aucun, Arrens and Estaing by the Navette estivale Argelès-Gazost > Arrens > lac d’Estaing; the shuttle services operate only in July and August on specific days of the week.
