Culture
The Esbareich festival committee prepares the “Saint John’s Eve Brandon”. The festival usually takes place at the end of June and may be postponed to 15 August, the feast day of the village’s patron saint, in bad weather.
The “Eglise et vestiges gallo-romains” includes a medieval portal with a chrism mounted above it, which has now been reassembled inside the church. The head of an ancient statue was also reused above the church door. The tower opposite the church is a former chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise and served as a place of worship while the new church was being built.
Even smaller architectural elements point to the history of the village. The stoup standing on a single foot dates from the late Middle Ages; its polygonal marble base may be newer than the hemispherical stone basin with medieval decoration. Some barns have curved beams known as “architectures baroussaises”. Esbareich’s “métier à ferrer” animal-shoeing station is the only one in the département covered with tiles.
Nature
Esbareich is one of the municipalities included in the ZNIEFF “Chaînon du Sommet d'Antenac au Cap de Pouy de Hourmigué”. Another ZNIEFF associated with Esbareich is the “Ourse de Sost”. It extends for approximately 9 kilometres from the source of the Ourse de Sost to Mauléon-Barousse and also includes nearly all of this stream’s tributaries.
In the ZNIEFF “Ourse de Sost” associated with Esbareich, populations of perennial honesty (Lunaria rediviva) have been recorded in damp, cool mountain forests along the watercourse.
Village Appearance and Arrival
The only access to the village of Esbareich is via a stone bridge in the style of Napoleon III. This bridge crosses the Ourse de Sost with a 22-metre arch.
