Culture

Cadéac Castle in its present form dates back to the 13th century. It comprises a keep, a terraced bailey and a fortification wall, of which only ruins remain. From 1608 onwards, the castle served as a prison for the villages of the Aure Valley. The upper section of the valley was excluded, as it was served by the prison castle of Tramezaïgues.

The Church of Saint-Félix dates from the 16th century. Its high nave is flanked on both sides by two chapels each. Three ribbed vaults span the choir and two bays of the nave.

The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Pène-Tailhade also dates from the 16th century. It has a large western porch spanning the road and is decorated with murals both inside and out.

In the 19th century, Cadéac was known as a spa town because of its sulphur springs. The Chalet chinois was built in the early 1890s under the influence of Théophile Gilet and represents the introduction of the chalet style to Cadéac. Its window openings are framed by painted bands with griffin motifs.

The Chalet de la Tour was completed in 1906. It stands south of Cadéac near the road to Arreau and has a southern gable decorated with carved and openwork wood.

The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Bacarisse was created from a dilapidated barn that has been rebuilt since 2012 by a team of volunteer construction workers.

Nature

Cadéac is one of the municipalities within ZNIEFF 730006519, which covers an area of 3,664.92 hectares. The forests of Cadéac form part of the large woodland complexes of this ZNIEFF. They provide nesting sites for the short-toed snake eagle and the booted eagle.

Paths and Transport

The Circuit du Pays d'art et d'histoire à Cadéac presents the history and cultural heritage of the village through six information panels.

The GR105 long-distance hiking trail leads from Arreau to Cadéac. The Pla de Toucouère mountain-bike route passes through the centre of Cadéac via the Place de la Fontaine and then continues along a forest road.

A demand-responsive bus service for the Aure Valley, available by reservation, serves Cadéac and Arreau.
