Culture and History
The altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in the Église de Bartrès dates from the early 18th century and is classified as a Monument historique. It comprises three carved bas-relief panels depicting the Baptism of Christ, the Visitation and the Beheading of John the Baptist.
The church of Bartrès was partially restored and partially rebuilt between 1855 and 1887. The Église de Bartrès also contains a semicircular baptismal cupboard dating from 1707, typical of the work of cabinetmakers from Lourdes.
Bernadette’s history is also closely connected with Bartrès: her first stay there lasted from November 1844 to March 1846, and she lived with the wet nurse Marie Laguës. The fields, the church and the Bergerie in Bartrès helped Bernadette reflect on her strong desire to receive her First Communion.
Pilgrimage Routes
The pilgrimage route in Bartrès includes a visit to the Bergerie and an experience of silence. The route leads uphill and is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
The Chemin de Bernadette vers Bartrès follows the white-and-red markings of the GR101 from the Grotte de Massabielle to Bartrès. From Lourdes, it is an easy five-kilometre walk.
Paths and Landscape
The La Lande de Bartrès route initially passes through the forest of Bartrès and then follows a section of the GR101. Along the route are remnants such as the Pouey Mayou dolmen; it also offers views of the Pyrenean mountain range.
