Culture

The Église Saint-Pierre was completed at the beginning of the 19th century and built entirely from stones taken from one of Sempesserre’s two castles. A large square Gascon-style tower, which served as a keep and is flanked by a bastion, remains of the upper castle. Sempesserre was once surrounded by two castles and formed a rectangular fortified complex within defensive walls. Some houses display features dating from the late Middle Ages, including a former manor house.

The village’s cultural character also includes the mural “La Perdrix rouge”, which is part of the Artistic Routes in the Pays Portes de Gascogne. It is listed in Sempesserre in the Pays Portes de Gascogne art collection, which invites visitors to explore the landscape by car or bicycle.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Las Martres) is a chapel belonging to Sempesserre’s religious heritage and is located on meadows opposite the Gers. In the cemetery at the foot of the church, a mausoleum houses the tomb of the Count de Lagrange, a marshal of the Empire.

Nature

The landscape around Sempesserre is hilly and features ponds and wooded areas. The platform of Sempesserre’s village hall offers a panorama; in suitable conditions, the Pyrenees can sometimes be seen from there. The village also overlooks the Gers valley and offers panoramic views of the Pyrenees.

Geographical Setting

The RD 284 departmental road crosses Sempesserre from north to south. It follows a straight former Roman road leading from the Pyrenees to the Garonne.
