Weapons and Roman pottery were discovered during the most recent removal of the Motte de Frégouville in 1953.

History

The Motte de Frégouville was a Gallo-Roman earthen rampart that helped travellers find their way as they travelled through the region. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was around 20 metres high, had a circumference of 400 metres and was surrounded by a ditch 9 to 12 metres wide. Even around the middle of the 20th century, the fortifications of Frégouville could still be identified by the ponds around the village.

Its Gothic windows comprise two windows to the north, two to the south and three to the east. The associated stained-glass windows depict Saint Justin, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Augustine, Saint John the Evangelist, John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary and Saint Germaine.

Around 1200 to 1230, Bertrand de Marestaing, Seigneur de Marestaing, enabled the construction of a fortress in Frégouville on the site of a small Romanesque church. The Gallo-Roman motte in the centre of the Château fort de Frégouville served as a belfry.
