Culture and History
The Musée de l'Armagnac has been located since 1981 in the outbuildings of the former Bishop's Palace of Condom. Its exhibition focuses on the production cycle of Armagnac spirits and the development of their production. It also features a monumental press weighing 18 tonnes, as well as sections on agricultural, viticultural, distilling and cooperage techniques.
The establishment of a Benedictine abbey in Condom in 1011 marked the starting point for the town's subsequent history. Saint-Pierre Cathedral was built in the 16th century on the site of a former 11th-century abbey church. It has a floor plan typical of southern French Gothic architecture, with a wide single-nave layout and side chapels between the buttresses. The cloister adjoining Saint-Pierre Cathedral was built in the 16th century on a large scale, with elegant arcades.
The Museum of Sacred Art in Pradau is located in a medieval church that was deconsecrated in 1984 and is listed as a historic monument. It displays a Romanesque portal, a painted coffered ceiling from the 17th century, sacred objects and 18th-century paintings by Jean-Baptiste Smets. The Espace Artistique Saint-Michel is a gallery for contemporary exhibitions in a former church built in 1869 and deconsecrated in 1975; free visits and temporary exhibitions are offered there.
The Romanesque Church of Saint-Antoine in Lialores was built in the 12th century, is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Lialores and is listed as a historic monument. It is the last surviving remnant of a Benedictine priory founded by Condom Abbey. A side aisle houses a small archaeological collection on the prehistoric and ancient settlement of Lialorais and Ténarèze; free visits and guided tours are offered. Every year on 15 August, Lialores hosts a championship in palet gascon.
The Condom municipal archives are open to the public on Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., as well as by appointment.
Markets and Regional Products
The covered market in Condom takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Saturday farmers' market takes place under Condom's market hall and offers local products such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, black pork, foie gras and pastries. At the Bouquerie market, regional producers offer their products on Sunday mornings. Public toilets and a drinking-water fountain are located under Bouquerie's covered market hall.
In the area around Condom, La Ferme de Martin Neuf offers tastings of its products and farm visits in July and August.
Nature and Trails
Condom lies on the Via Podiensis, one of four routes to Santiago de Compostela; the route begins in Le Puy-en-Velay and is 750 kilometres long. The 35-kilometre section of the Via Podiensis between Lectoure and Condom forms part of the serial property of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
The Voie Verte de l'Armagnac is a 33-kilometre-long paved trail on a former railway line connecting Condom and Eauze. The 11-kilometre-long Sentier de la Baïse connects the ports of Condom and Valence-sur-Baïse on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
Gauge Island is a protected natural area between the navigable Gauge Canal and the Baïse River; information boards explain the local wildlife and plant life. Lake Bousquetara is a fishing spot and a remarkable wetland in Condom and Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon.
