Biran: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Biran is a former 13th-century Castelnau situated on a limestone spur, preserving remains of fortification walls and castle ruins. A fortified castle was built between 1080 and 1100 on Biran’s double castle-mound site.

History

The surviving square watchtower of Biran Castle is 20 metres high. At the entrance to the village of Biran stands the Porte-Tour du Castelnau, which is separate from the church building and has served as a bell tower since 1666.

The Église de Ramensan is a rural church typical of the Gers region of Gascony; its main construction phases date from the 12th and 19th centuries. It has been listed as a historic monument since 7 September 1978. The church is associated with a historic devotion to Saint Andrew; in the past, crying children were taken there on pilgrimage.

Culture

The Tourraque de Lacouture is 11 metres high and the most imposing of the Gallo-Roman pillars in the Gers.

The Musée des Jacobins, a museum, is located in the vicinity of Biran. In the wider region around Biran are the Château de Loubersan, a castle, the Abbaye de Flaran, an abbey, and the Abbaye de Boüillas, a historic site.

Guided and commented tours of the village are offered in Biran by prior appointment.

During the Easter, summer and All Saints’ school holidays, the Ferme du Hitton offers 1.5-hour guided tours by reservation. Depending on the season, visitors can experience the milking of jennies, the gathering of aromatic plants, or distillation to produce essential oils and floral water.

The Ferme du Hitton specialises in breeding Pyrenean jennies and producing organic cosmetics from donkey’s milk.
