The Sainte-Marie Cathedral is designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela”. It was built between 1489 and 1680 over a period of two centuries. The Escalier monumental is also one of the city’s defining landmarks: completed in 1863, it connects the historic town with the new town across a difference in elevation of 35 metres, with 234 steps, or 374 steps in total including the two flights. Since 1992, the first landing has been home to the contemporary sculpture “L’Observatoire du temps” by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa. From the lower landing, there is a view over the Gers Valley and, in clear weather, of the Pyrenees.

Culture and history

The Musée des Amériques – Auch houses the second-largest public collection of pre-Columbian art in France. Every year, its garden hosts sculpture exhibitions and meetings with artists.

The Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation du Gers conveys the reality of the Second World War as well as the connections between local and national history. It was founded in 1954 and collects objects belonging to former members of the Resistance. Since 2023, the museum has been located in Auch’s historic centre, in a modern, extensively documented space.

Gardens and greenways

The Jardin Ortholan is a 7,600 m² French garden with Hispano-Moorish influences around the water basins and an English-influenced children’s garden. The Square Jérôme Cuzin is a 2,800 m² garden surrounding the former seminary chapel and has held the “Jardin Remarquable” designation since 2022. The Promenade Claude Desbons is a greenway reserved for non-motorised travel.

Routes through Auch

The Parcours 3 “La nature à Vélo” cycle route is approximately 6 km long and classified as easy to moderately difficult; in the upper town, it includes a steep section. The Pousterles of Auch are medieval, steeply sloping lanes, some with steps, connecting the upper town with the river.
