The Neo-Gothic Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church was built in 1885; its bell tower is 41 metres high. Saint-Salvadou’s church is also known as the “Cathedral of the Ségala”.

Culture and history

Saint-Salvadou was home to a priory dependent on La Chaise-Dieu Abbey. In 1422, a castle was built here; it was demolished in 1643 following a royal court ruling during the Croquants’ revolt.

The Ostal des écrivains is dedicated to the three poets born in Saint-Salvadou—Abbé Justin Bessou, André Pradel and Henri de Lestang—as well as to the Occitan language.

Landscape

The Serène winds through Saint-Salvadou’s bocage landscape. The Fontaine des Fachilièiras, also known as the Fontaine des Fées, is a natural quartz rock with a cone measuring around 40 centimetres that is always filled with water. It lies on the edge of a forest covering the remains of a Neolithic necropolis.

The “Circuit des poètes” is an easy, yellow-marked circular hiking trail starting in front of Saint-Salvadou town hall. In Saint-Salvadou, the “Oreilles en Balade” audio trail leads to listening stations at the Sécadou, the church, the Mai and the Fontaine des Fées, while sharing local stories. The listening stations can be used independently of one another; the duration of the visit can be adapted from 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the time available.
