The castle of Castelmary stands on a rocky spur, overlooking the gorges and meanders of the Lézert. Today, it is a ruin; only a few sections of wall remain, and these are privately owned.

Culture and History
At the entrance to the village of Castelmary, the Porta Barrieyra is visible. It dates from the 14th century and probably also served as the bell tower of the church dedicated to Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian.
Today, the ruins of the church of Castelmary serve as a passageway for the path that goes around the tower at the entrance to the village.
Nature and Landscape
Castelmary is one of the municipalities within the continental ZNIEFF Type 2 area “Vallée du Viaur et ses affluents” and is now a protected site in the Aveyron département.
The Lézert rises in the hamlet of Castanet. In the village of Port de la Besse, after flowing through wild, wooded and steep-sided gorges, it joins the Viaur.
The “Entre Lézert et Viaur” hiking route leads from the plateau into a wild, still-unspoilt valley.
