History
The Plateau des Forges du Gua is a workers’ district that developed in connection with the industrial use of coal and the production of pig iron and steel. At the Musée de la Mine Lucien Mazars, the history of the coalfield and the mining industry is presented through a reconstructed mine gallery with scenes from the lives of miners and a simulation of a firedamp explosion. The Musée de la Mine d'Aubin was inaugurated in 1979 and presents the history of the Decazeville coalfield in three rooms.
The Maison Départementale de la mémoire résistance, déportation et citoyenneté is dedicated to the history of the Second World War. Across three levels, it presents stories, accounts, eyewitness testimonies and photographs about the war years in Aveyron and France.
Culture
The Église Notre-Dame d'Aubin was built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 15th century; it combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. It preserves Romanesque treasures, including a polychrome wooden Christ, a figuratively decorated capital, an altar and a lead baptismal font.
The Fort d'Aubin stands on a rocky promontory and offers panoramic views over the town. It can be reached via a narrow lane lined with half-timbered houses; the Chemin de Conques à Toulouse leads to the Fort d'Aubin.
Nature
The Forêt de la Vaysse is characterised by black locust trees and developed on former open-cast mines that were replanted after mining ended. The forest has marked circular trails described in the hiking guide “De Découverte en découverte”, suitable for both families and experienced hikers.
