Surba: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Two distinctly different traces converge in Surba: the Romanesque Church of Saint Nicholas and the former gypsum industry. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1224; by decree of 29 July 1977, it was listed as a historic monument. A few metres from the village of Surba, it stands on a small promontory formed by a glacial moraine.
Culture and History
The Plâtrières de Surba industrial site is also part of the history of the area. It was closed in 1957 and is now derelict. The former gypsum factory in Surba comprises several buildings, including vertical kilns unique in France, storage silos and extraction galleries.

Nature
Since 2007, Surba has been part of the Quiès Calcaires de Tarascon Natura 2000 site, which is designated both as a Special Protection Area and as a Special Area of Conservation.
The Quiès calcaires de Tarascon-sur-Ariège and Grotte de la Petite Caougnau Natura 2000 site includes Surba and contains seven habitat types listed in Annex I, as well as nine species covered by the Habitats Directive, including six bat species. The same Natura 2000 site also includes eight bird species covered by the Birds Directive, including Egyptian vulture, bearded vulture and eagle owl.
Roc de Sédour is a steeply rising rock massif and is suitable for observing peregrine falcon, Egyptian vulture and eagle owl. The Roc de Sédour biotope protection area includes Surba, Arignac and Bédeilhac et Aynat. Peregrine falcon and Egyptian vulture are listed as relevant species for this biotope protection area.
Routes
The Sédour – Le Cimetière aux Boucs climbing sector in the municipality of Surba can be reached via Bédeilhac; from the car park available there, an approach hike of approximately 35 minutes leads along a hillside path.
