Roquefixade: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Twelve signposted circular hiking trails start and end at the Gîte d’étape de Roquefixade. They can be walked in either direction, in sections, or combined with one another. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Roquefixade is planning their stay directly in this location.
Hiking and Trails
A hiking guide to the Roquefixade circular trails covers the local flora, geology, landscape and history. It costs €3 and is available at the Gîte d’étape de Roquefixade and at the tourist offices in Lavelanet, Foix and Mirepoix. The Le Château circular trail is 3 km long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and includes 220 metres of ascent.
The Sentier des Crêtes starts at the Gîte d’étape, partly follows the Sentier Cathare and leads back to the Gîte. At the Roc de la Lauzade, it offers a 360-degree viewpoint; there are also views of Montségur and the Tabe Massif. The GR 367 Sentier Cathare runs for 241 kilometres from Port-la-Nouvelle to Foix and is designed to be completed in 13 days. It was created with the aim of connecting the eight castles of the Pays Cathare, including Roquefixade, on foot.
The hiking trail La Gleiso Catoulico (No. 5) also starts at the Gîte d’étape de Roquefixade, follows the Sentier Cathare to the Grotte de la Gleiso Catoulico and returns via the Sentier Cathare. The Tour du Pays d’Olmes nord hiking trail reaches the Crêtes de Roquefixade after Bac d’en Bas and Bac du Haut, then descends towards the Château and continues to Leychert. This hike also passes the Orris des Château de Roquefixade.
The Association Patrimoine de Roquefixade organises discovery walks focusing on the local flora in Roquefixade. Escap’Ânes offers a one-day excursion around Roquefixade accompanied by one or more donkeys.
Culture and History
From the centre of Roquefixade, a signposted path leads to the castle ruins in around 30 minutes; the climb presents no major difficulties. The remains of Roquefixade Castle were classified as a Monument historique in 1995. The castle itself was first mentioned in 1034.
The Church of Saint John the Baptist contains an altarpiece dating from 1728, attributed to Charles Clarac. The gilded and carved altarpiece of the high altar has been protected as a historic monument since December 1986.
The early music festival Musica del temps passat takes place every year and comprises four concert evenings in the church and on the village square. Early music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the Baroque period is presented.
Nature
There are around 30 dry-stone huts known as Orris at the Pech de Roquefixade.
