Culture

The historic fief of Pailhès was owned by the Bernard Amiel family from the 12th century onward. In the 13th century, the historic estate passed to the Villemur family through marriage.

The Chapelle du château de Pailhès was listed as a historic monument by decree of 21 January 1997. Its bell is protected as a movable cultural object. The Château de Pailhès was listed as a Monument historique in February 1997.

Only ruins remain of the former village that developed around the Château de Pailhès. The historic village area also contains an old street that leads through a gate.

The Pailhès war memorial stands in the Saint-Blaise cemetery and was probably erected in the early 1920s. It is a white limestone obelisk topped by a cross.

Nature

The Lèze River runs through Pailhès. The village is considered a gateway to the Plantaurel range and was included in the PNR-PA in 2008. Thanks to its relief and fragmented landholdings, Pailhès has preserved its bocage character.

Trails

The GR78, the Chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen, passes through Pailhès. GR78 users will find a public water tap and public toilets near the church in Pailhès.

The Pamiers–Le Mas-d’Azil stage of the Grande Traversée VTT de l’Ariège leads to Pailhès. The section near Pailhès runs through the mid-mountain terrain of the Plantaurel range; the route is technical and sporty and includes technically difficult climbs and descents on single-track trails.
